Paint vs. stain

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on {rely on} your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths."
-Proverbs 3:5,6

One Bible translation says, "and He shall make your paths straight." My journey has not been straight. In fact it looks a lot more like the road in the image above. I have not always trusted and do not always lean on Him. One thing I know for sure is that my own understanding will trip me up every time. And the more I think I know, the more I realize I do not know. My challenge is to not think so much. To be silent and listen. To ask and to follow. To remember that if He is my Shepherd, then I must be a sheep.

I read this today and thought I'd share:

"It is like that here. The terrible thing, the almost impossible thing, is to hand over your whole self—all your wishes and precautions—to God. But it is far easier than what we are trying to do instead. For what we are trying to do is to remain what we call "ourselves," to keep personal happiness as our great aim in life, and yet at the same time be "good." We are all trying to let our mind and heart go their own way—centered on money or pleasure or ambition—and hoping, in spite of this, to behave honestly and chastely and humbly. And that is exactly what Christ warned us you could not do. As He said, a thistle cannot produce figs. If I am a field that contains nothing but grass-seed, I cannot produce wheat. Cutting the grass may keep it short: but I shall still produce grass and no wheat. If I want to produce wheat, the change must go deeper than the surface. I must be ploughed up and re-sown.

"That is why the real problem of the Christian life comes where people do not usually look for it. It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussing and frettings; coming in out of the wind."

"We can only do it for moments at first. But from those moments the new sort of life will be spreading through our system: because now we are letting God work at the right part of us. It is the difference between paint, which is merely laid on the surface, and a dye or stain which soaks right through."

Anything but simple

I am a simple girl. I like things neat and clean.

Even in design. I believe that less is more.

Today I went to check out a new linen store that my sister had wandered into last week and wanted me to see.

It was anything but simple.

These linens are spectacular.

Can you believe these?

I have never seen anything like them.

Aren't they gorgeous? And they are for rent. From here.

Full house

My youngest daughter who is away at college is home for the summer. Yeah! I love having her home.

And my oldest daughter, the one who is having the baby is sharing her room with her (yeah again!). It is a long story and a great one but way too long to put in this post. In a nutshell, her husband got a great new job, but it is a couple of hours away and she is still finishing up the school year (she is a teacher) and they want to keep her doctor and deliver the baby here ... so he is commuting back and forth and living part-time away and part-time here and until August ... we have a full house!

My daughter's room is tiny and the closet space is limited and this soon-to-be "abuelita" has been thinking about things like where will these girls keep all their clothes and then where the baby will stay when they are visiting and where we keep all those little baby things and we might need a changing table... and the best answer for all those things was this:

Hemnes 8-drawer dresser from Ikea

It has drawer space for big girls staying here during the summer and a little girl who will be visiting often. I hope. It is high enough to be used as a changing table and the inside of the drawers have the cutest yellow and white ticking pattern.  But I didn't like the knobs.

So I went up to Target and changed them out. I would have loved to have put the ones from Anthropologie on them ... but I am saving my money for cute little baby girl things. The ones from Target were $14.99 for a pack of four.

There is nothing like having your kids home.

Office work

`
Emily Henderson
I've been spending a lot of time at my desk lately. Between 3 projects in the middle of major construction, various other small projects, reading blogs ;.) the new wedding biz, keeping up with invoicing, tax records and emails, I can spend hours and hours in front of the computer.

Most of my hours at my desk are at night.
Late.
Sometimes very late.
And my chair had this squeek to it every time I moved. And it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world. And it was brown. Not that brown is bad. But it isn't white. Oh, how much I wished it was white.

This is the chair where I spent hours and hours working late at night

Last week, as I walked through Staples to pick up a 2012 calendar (weddings are booking up!) I spotted a white leather chair. It is not the one I have been coveting (sleeker and much more expensive) but it was very comfortable. And the price was right. And I had a coupon.

My ultimate chair - Charles Eames ribbed white leather office chair

The instructions said "easy". Which sounded great because I am tired of complicated instructions with drawings that take a rocket scientist to comprehend. And they were. Just three easy steps.

Now you know where I spend most of my nights (this exciting life that I lead!).
The brown chair with the squeak has a new home.
Next door in my husband's office.
It looks great with his white desk :)
