Laundry room reveal

I just finished a great laundry room remodel yesterday. It is a small room situated off of a beautiful kitchen that was remodeled several years ago (I posted about the remodel here). When the kitchen was being finished the laundry room was cleaned up with fresh paint and a new floor but it was never really finished properly. It didn't have adequate storage - actually, it didn't have any storage. It was basically just a box with a washer and dryer inside.

The goal was to give the client a pretty space (you know, to make doing laundry less painful) and also a space that would function well as a laundry room, have room for extra storage and also be able to be used for a staging area when entertaining. It was a lot to ask for in that tiny space. That was until we realized we could borrow space from the hall closets behind the laundry room wall.

The hall closets behind the laundry room wall were very deep. Too deep for a functional closet space actually because things just got lost behind other things. Taking half of the closet gave us the perfect amount of space for the new recessed cabinet. It also made the hall closet function better. It was a win-win.

Right outside the laundry room, was a kitchen cabinet that I wanted to mimic. I wanted to laundry room to look like it was designed as part of the kitchen remodel.  Instead of coming out into the room as the kitchen cabinet did however, the laundry room cabinet would need to be recessed into the wall.

I wanted the new cabinet to have a large surface area that could be used to fold laundry, hold a basket if necessary and to use as an extra entertaining area during a party.  I also wanted to be able to close the doors for a clean look or to hide what was inside if necessary.

Instead of the oil rubbed bronze hardware that I had chosen for the kitchen, I selected a polished nickel knob to tie in with the washer and dryer. We used a remnant of white marble instead of the honed black granite that was on the kitchen cabinet for a lighter and fresher look in this small room. A fresh blue was painted on the walls (Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue HC-143) and black accents were used to unify the new room with the kitchen.

Above the washer and dryer we added upper cabinets with open shelving and a rod to hang clothes. Did you know if you dry your clothes for 10 - 15 minutes and then hang them up most of the wrinkles will disappear. I rarely have to pull out the iron.

I think I would leave my laundry room door open all the time, wouldn't you?
