This mystery

Have you seen Brene´ Brown's Ted talk on The Power of Vulnerability? If you are not one of the over 10 million viewers, you can see it here. It is powerful and profound and very much worth listening to. But she also has a six minute video where she speaks about her faith journey. And for me, her words in this short video express much of how I feel (but so much better than I ever could).

In Thoughts in Solitude, Part 2, Chapter II, fifteen lines have become known as The Merton Prayer. I love the vulnerability and honesty in these words ...

The Merton Prayer

"Faith minus vulnerability and mystery is extremism. Don't call it faith if there's no vulnerability or uncertainty. If you've got all the answers, then don't call what you do faith."
- Brene´ Brown

There was a time when I thought that faith in God was simple. And easy. And I used to "know" so much. But then I got challenged by many things. Some of the things I experienced myself, but most of what challenged me was what I watched others experience. Pain. Death. Suffering. Unspeakable suffering. And it changed the way I thought about a lot of things. Especially God. I realized that I really didn't know as much as I thought I did. And it turned out that it is not a bad place to be. So now I cling to a different kind of faith; one of uncertainty and wonder. And hope (and oh so many questions I want to ask one day).

For now, this is enough:

What a lovely post and just what I needed today of all days. It brought tears to my eyes. I only recently heard of Brene Brown but instantly became a fan. Her TED talk on vulnerability is life changing (to me anyway). :)

Blessings,
